Journey to greater independence: A story of strength and support

With the right support, one person supported rebuilt their confidence, developed life skills, found meaningful work, and moved in with their partner – showcasing the power of person-centred support and the journey to independence.

At Achieve together, we are committed to empowering people to live as independently as possible. With the right support at the right time, individuals can overcome barriers, build confidence, and achieve their goals. This anonymised story is a powerful example of resilience, growth, and the positive impact of person-centred support.

A fresh start

In 2019, a person we supported joined one of our residential homes after experiencing a difficult period while living independently. Having been financially exploited by neighbours, they were left feeling vulnerable and uncertain. From the moment they arrived, our focus was on helping them rebuild their life, regain a sense of safety, and take steps toward greater independence.

Building confidence and life skills

Initially, they needed support with decision-making and managing finances, areas that had become sources of anxiety due to past experiences. Our team offered practical guidance and reassurance, beginning with safeguarding their finances and gradually reintroducing budgeting responsibilities as their confidence returned.

Beyond financial skills, they also worked on building confidence in day-to-day life. Going out alone and making independent choices had become daunting, but with encouragement and consistent support, they began to rediscover their independence. Step by step, they grew more comfortable navigating their local community and making choices on their own terms.

Steps toward a brighter future

As confidence and self-belief returned, so did aspirations. The person supported expressed a desire to find meaningful work and connect more with others. With support, they secured a volunteer role at a local food bank, gaining valuable experience and a renewed sense of purpose.

During this time, they also formed a close relationship, which soon blossomed into a partnership. The growth in personal and social confidence paved the way for a new chapter – moving into a shared home with their partner and beginning a life together.

A new chapter: Independent living

After three years of progress, they and their partner got engaged and made the move into their own home. It was a major milestone, marking a full circle moment in their journey toward greater independence.

Looking ahead

Today, they are thriving – the happiest they’ve been since joining Achieve together. With plans for their wedding and a continued focus on personal growth, their future looks bright and full of promise.

This journey is a powerful reminder that independence isn’t just about where someone lives – it’s about having the confidence, support, and skills to live life on one’s own terms. We’re proud to have been part of this journey and excited to see what the future holds.
