We are fortunate in Achieve together, and right across the social care sector, to benefit from a wonderfully diverse workforce. While Black History Month each October remembers famous black people who have challenged systems, overcome significant discrimination and been hugely successful in their careers, it is important to recognise the impact of black people working hard every day in social care, committed to improving the lives of others.
The Black History Month celebration in Achieve together was a powerful reminder of the commitment and passion of black team members. It is time for those people to reclaim the narrative, embrace and shout about the tremendous difference they make in social care, to improving the quality of life of those they support.
The celebration at Stanley Art Centre in South Norwood on 8 October was packed. There was a fantastic array of colour from the dresses and costumes worn. Additionally, everyone enjoyed delicious foods from different parts of Africa and the Caribbean, storytelling, music and dance.
One Home Manager who spoke reminded us of the challenges faced by black people and encouraged everyone to ‘know yourself’. She asserted herself that she is black and is not going anywhere. Sue Ncube a Home Manager who was instrumental in the planning of the celebration told us that black people have come a long way, we all stand united. While all of our stories are different, we continue to fight, and the power is ours.
There is much to remember, there continues to be adversity to overcome, but united we stand in Achieve together, shoulder to shoulder and enjoy the diversity of our whole workforce and equally of the people we support.
This wonderful event was kindly sponsored by Guild Building Services.
